Smithsonian Channel is a joint venture between Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution. Our awe-inspiring programs, powerful documentaries and entertaining factual stories shine new light on popular genres such as air and space, history, science, nature, travel and pop culture. From legacy series such as Aerial America, Million Dollar American Princesses and Air Disasters to recent hits like America in Color, The Lost Tapes and The Coronation, our award-winning programming is available across multiple platforms in HD and 4K Ultra HD. The Channel is also available internationally in Canada, Singapore and Latin America, with more international launches to come in 2019. We currently have offices in New York City and Washington, DC.


The Social Media Content Manager will help execute the day-to-day social media operations on Smithsonian Channel brand profiles, including but not limited to US, UK, and OTT brands. The Social Media Content Manager will be in a position to drive overall social and creative strategies by crafting compelling content and social tactics that raise brand awareness and audience engagement across multiple social platforms.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Social Media Team to further develop and execute an ever-evolving, scalable and measurable social content strategy across a diverse social media footprint, including global brand pages and a streaming service

  • Lead the content creation process, working closely with Design, Video, and Editorial teams to create or reversion content tailored for international audiences

  • Proactively develop, pitch, and optimize social content strategies & tactics that drive audience growth and increase brand awareness and relevancy

  • Take a leading role in the management of day-to-day social media operations, maintaining a critical eye over creative content and brand tone to ensure a high standard of quality

  • Manage the weekly planning, editing, and publishing of editorial content calendars

  • Manage community engagement with the goal of cultivating and growing social audiences

  • Manage and edit the work of freelance writers, assuring copy is consistently creative, engaging, and maintains a strong brand voice and persona

  • Write timely posts to drive engagement strategies as needed

  • Monitor social trends and influencers to inform and shape a responsive marketing and outreach strategy

  • Create and analyze reports on key social media metrics, defining guidelines for best practices and benchmarks, and providing content feedback on an ongoing basis

  • Work with Analytics Manager to develop reporting systems to identify top content and validate ROI

  • Develop, initiate and manage all aspects of paid social media boosts and promotions; from creative concepts to budget tracking

  • Assist Social Media Lead in developing editorial relationships with brand representatives and other partners


The ideal candidate is an experienced marketing professional who is organized, creative, and strategic in equal measure. Accuracy, attention to detail, and time management are important, as well as the ability to work within deadlines while managing multiple projects across several brands. This person should be an expert at multi-tasking. A passion and savvy for social media are important, but we’re not seeking a "guru" - the ideal candidate is hard-working and has real experience getting involved in project execution. We are seeking more than a "self-starter" - the ideal candidate should be hungry to expand a growing business’s presence, and be a strategic thinker who can connect social media growth to the overall growth of the company.

  • At least 4 years of professional experience working in social media, digital media, and/or marketing for a brand or agency, managing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Youtube content and strategy

  • Experience managing a social brand for a growing business, with the demonstrated ability to deliver on key business goals

  • Experience working with a creative team to develop a wide variety of successful, shareable content designed for social media audiences, including video, text-on-screen, graphics, animated gifs, cover photos, etc.

  • Experience using social listening and audience insights to develop and shift social strategies

  • Experience executing paid media campaigns on social, specifically Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and experience tracking budgets on paid media projects

  • Strong understanding of best practices for community engagement, platform strategy, and social audience development

  • Deep knowledge of social media KPIs, analytics, and reporting. Experience with Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, and Facebook Insights are necessary

  • Strong presentation skills, and an ability to communicate the importance of social media to the goals of the entire business

  • Excellent team management and project management skills

  • Experience working with international brands, and brands with a multi-platform presence, is a plus

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills required

  • Basic graphic editing and design skills desired

  • Knowledge of the new media landscape, including VOD, OTT, mobile and emerging video platforms

  • Interest in documentary films and non-fiction programming preferred

  • A can-do attitude, and experience rolling up your sleeves and getting deeply involved in all stages of project execution
